Structure and properties of flax vs. lyocell fiber-reinforced polylactide stereocomplex composites

A commonly used natural cellulose fiber (flax) and a regenerated (Lyocell) were at 20 wt% to reinforce polylactide stereocomplex (sc-PLA) composites. Composites prepared by melt compounding fibers an equivalent proportion of PLLA/PDLA, followed injection molding. The structures properties these two kinds fiber/sc-PLA composites compared evaluated. results showed that the total crystallinity crystallite content could be increased reinforcing with fibers, Lyocell more effective in accelerating formation crystallites than flax fibers. Mechanical much poorer those interfacial adhesion values Lyocell/sc-PLA inferior flax/sc-PLA higher impact strength similar tensile vs. composites, but Young’s modulus lower Vicat softening temperatures both nearly 100 °C PLLA. highest temperature ~ 170 °C.
